Hampta Pass: Where Lush Valleys Meet the Lunar Desert
Hampta Pass is one of Himachal Pradesh’s most rewarding treks, a high-altitude crossover at about 14,100 feet that links the green Kullu Valley with the barren, moon-like landscape of Lahaul-Spiti. Starting near Manali, the trail winds through dense pine and maple forests, open meadows dotted with wildflowers, and gushing mountain streams. Along the way, trekkers camp at scenic spots like Chika and Balu ka Ghera, surrounded by towering peaks such as Indrasan and Deo Tibba.
The highlight is the pass crossing itself. After a steep climb, the scenery changes dramatically: lush greenery gives way to dry, rugged terrain on the Lahaul side. The descent leads to Shea Goru and then Chatru along the Chandra River, with several river crossings adding to the thrill.
Most itineraries end with a visit to the stunning Chandratal Lake, a crescent-shaped lake that glows in shades of blue. Moderate in difficulty and best done from June to September, Hampta Pass is ideal for first-time Himalayan trekkers.

- Iconic Campsites: Highlights include camping at scenic spots like Jwara, the glacial floor at Balu Ka Ghera, and the stream-side meadow at Shea-Goru.
- Hanging Glaciers and Peaks: Along the route, you catch striking views of massive mountains and features like the rare hanging Hampta Glacier. Most itineraries also conclude with an excursion to the stunning high-altitude Chandratal Lake before returning to Manali.
